Whatsapp Messenger has become a very popular medium to connect with friends and family. In July, WhatsApp announced that it has 1 billion daily active users, Whatsapp has secured protection from prying eyes for all its user’s by end-to-end encryption. This means, even though WhatsApp cannot break the code, and no one can read messages sent by customers.

But do you know by this app any unknown person can trace your activities like your sleeping time, when you wake up, how much time you are online?

Software engineer Robert Heaton has written in a blog post that this app’s ‘online status’ feature is actually a weak link and with its help, a user’s activities can be tracked.
Heaton has also explained the process by which you can track about any person’s activity on Whatsapp. All you need is a laptop, chrome extension, and Whatsapp web.

Earlier, Heaton was trying to track his friend’s activity on the basis of the last seen option, but due to the app’s privacy settings, he could not do it.

Heaton has said in this blog post that he wrote just 4 lines to track the last scene in the javascript code and found the complete pattern of his friend’s activity. He further wrote that the company has given the option to hide only the ‘last seen‘, but the user can be tracked by looking at ‘Online’ under their name.

If you have a phone number on your phone and the same number you use for Whatsapp, you will be able to see when it is online and when not on the user app. And it is not necessary that what is being monitored also has the number of monitors. This means that even unknown people can track your activity from Whatsapp.

By using this method, one user can track other user’s activities, but due to end-to-end encryption, Whatsapp cannot read messages. In addition to Whatsapp, there is a similar online status feature on Facebook Messenger which can cause this problem.
